FIGHTING SILENCE by Aly Martinez ~ Review

Fighting Silence (On The Ropes #1)
Aly Martinez
Releasing February 23rd

SYNOPSIS

Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.
Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

REVIEW

This book… This book right here is why I LOVE READING!!! The story is captivating. The Characters are amazing! Till Page is a natural FIGHTER with a heart of gold. Eliza Reynolds is a true roll-model, she possess unbelievable strength and perseverance. OH AND the supporting characters… every single one is witty, amazing and add such depth to the story.

Fighting Silence is a story of survival, plain and simple. Till and Eliza are from extreme poverty and their parents are total losers!!! Their only out becomes this abandoned apartment that they both escape to night after night.

I’d never had anything I could call my own, but Eliza Reynolds would always be mine.
After five years of friendship saying good-bye to their apartment and growing up is harder than either of them thought possible. They might only admit to being friends, but they both know it’s more than that, and it has been for a long time, maybe even from day one. On what was supposed to be his last night with Eliza, Til gives in to his every desire.
“I was a thief, but I had convinced myself that it wasn’t wrong. I was only stealing what was rightfully mine. The way her eyes had lit when I’d said, “Forever,” told me that she thought this was more. I would have corrected her if I hadn’t meant it from the bottom of my soul. I’d just known I couldn’t follow through.”
At this point Till runs from Eliza and the reality that is sure to face him. He begins working countless hours while attempting to squeeze in his one last escape, boxing. With his father in jail and his mother not giving a sh$t it becomes apparent that he will need to raise his two younger brothers. Life is not only unfair BUT it SUCKS! He finally admits that he needs Eliza in his life.
“Not fair? Oh, so now, we’re talking about fair? Well, let me tell you how fucking not fair this is to me. I fell in love with a man whose fantasy is crawling through my window to escape reality. All the while, my fantasy is walking out that door to navigate reality by his side. I’m pretty sure that is the definition of not fair.”
My heart really went out to Till as he struggled with the emotional and financial responsibilities of raising his brothers. One thing is an absolute, Till Page is dedicated!!! He worked countless hours at his construction job PLUS continues his training at the boxing gym. I found myself literally rooting for him when he was in the ring! And yet fate was not finished dealing Till blows...

The growth both characters show was inspiring! I truly loved seeing Eliza become the strong independent woman she was destined to be.

“Just open your eyes, Till. I’m sick of letting the Earth spin under my feet while you circle around me. We belong together, but if that isn’t going to happen, I have to start moving on.”
Aly Martinez has quickly become one of those authors that I will drop what I am doing to read the INSTANT her book hits my kindle! I love how her stories keep me guessing and gasping. Aly has a magical way with worlds that makes me not only want to devour her books BUT also leap into their world! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND FIGHTING SILENCE!!
5 stars!!!  A definite re-read ASAP for me!!!
